Abstract
This thesis explores the design of a sustainable, culturally integrated train station in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia, serving as both a transportation hub and a gateway to one of the Kingdom’s most significant heritage destinations. The project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism by promoting sustainable tourism infrastructure that respects and enhances the region’s historical and environmental context. Through a comprehensive process that includes site analysis, case studies, programmatic development, and architectural design, this research investigates how contemporary transportation architecture can harmonize with Al Ula’s unique cultural and natural landscape. Case studies of the Haramain High-Speed Railway Station and Napoli Afragola Station provided insight into best practices for circulation, sustainability, and architectural identity. The resulting design proposal emphasizes environmental responsiveness through passive cooling, integration of renewable energy, and sensitive urban planning. Furthermore, it reflects Al Ula’s historical significance by incorporating traditional architectural elements in a modern, functional context. The project demonstrates how infrastructure can transcend utilitarian function to become a catalyst for cultural preservation, sustainable growth, and enhanced regional connectivity.
