Abstract
Dominant narratives on smart cities and urban transformation tend to stress the value of what is technologically feasible. Thus, less attention is paid to the twin-questions of what is politically and socially possible, and how to employ advances of modern architecture, interior design and product design, to attain the goals of sustainability, well-being, and resilience in urban space. This book argues that the tangible-built environment must be the starting point for making cities inclusive, safe, and resilient (SDG 11). This chapter sketches the broader context of this discussion. To this end, it outlines the book’s rationale, objectives, structure, and key take-aways. By integrating theoretical insights with empirically grounded case studies, focusing mainly on the Arab Peninsula, this book demonstrates how architecture and design rooted in local contexts can enhance well-being, social inclusion, and cultural continuity. This chapter sets the stage for a broader conversation on architecture and design, and their role in rendering cities human-centered, user-friendly, and adaptive to citizens’ needs.
