Abstract
This study explores the application of ecological translation theory to Naguib Mahfouz's novel The Thief and The Dogs through a comparative analysis of its English translations. Ecological translation emphasizes the interconnectedness of language, culture, and environment, advocating for a balanced and adaptive approach to meaning transfer. By examining selected passages from the original Arabic text and their corresponding translations, the research highlights how ecological considerations influence the translator’s choices and affect the preservation or transformation of cultural and contextual elements. The study reveals that ecological translation not only provides a nuanced framework for assessing translation fidelity but also deepens our understanding of how literary works function across linguistic and cultural ecosystems. This comparative approach sheds light on the translator’s role as both a mediator and a participant in cross-cultural dialogue, emphasizing the ethical and contextual dimensions of literary translation.
