Abstract
Preserving the Intangible Heritage of Egyptian Woodwork Craft Through Digital Documentation and Technology
Abstract
Egyptian woodwork craft represents a significant aspect of the nation's intangible cultural heritage, reflecting centuries of skill, artistry, and historical narratives. Due to the socio-economic changes occurring, urbanization, as well as the decline of traditional craftsmanship. The heritage is facing the risk of disappearance, and through the integration of digital documentation and modern technologies appears a promising solution for preserving and revitalization of the traditional craftsmanship. The research explores the role of advanced digital tools such as 3D scanning, virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), as well as digital fabrication in recording, archiving, and reproducing Egyptian woodwork designs. By digitizing woodwork artifacts and construction techniques, it enables cultural institutions, researchers, and artisans to safeguard this invaluable heritage while making it more accessible for education and future generations. Digital platforms offer more and facilitate collaborative efforts between traditional craftsmen and modern designers, through enabling innovation while maintaining cultural authenticity.
This study highlights the historical importance of Egyptian woodwork, the challenges that threaten its survival, and the application of technology-driven solutions to ensure its sustainability. Case studies of successful digital preservation initiatives are examined to demonstrate best practices in safeguarding artistic traditions. The findings emphasize the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration between heritage experts, technologists, and policymakers to create an integrated approach for the conservation of Egyptian woodwork. Through this research, a framework for leveraging digital technology in cultural heritage preservation is proposed, offering a viable path to maintaining the authenticity and continuity of Egypt’s traditional woodwork craft (El-Shahat 2020,45).
