Abstract
This dissertation explores the role of reverse logistics in the Saudi Arabian pharmaceutical
industry, focusing on challenges, strategies, and success factors in managing the returns and
disposal of expired or spoiled medicines. As the Saudi Arabian pharmaceutical sector is
experiencing a phenomenal transformation, environmentally friendly and effective reverse
logistics processes are more necessary than ever. The research investigates how reverse logistics
systems enable pharmaceutical firms to meet stringent health regulations, minimize waste,
improve operational performance, and achieve sustainability. The drivers of adopting reverse
logistics, including regulation, cost savings, and environmental sustainability, are analyzed, as well
as the impediments to adoption, including high operating costs, regulatory complexity, and
logistical inefficiencies.
Second, the study contrasts practices employed by drug firms, such as the adoption of digital
monitoring systems, third-party logisticians' partnership, and eco-friendly destruction processes.
Post-enactment, companies have managed to optimize the effectiveness of reverse logistics
processes, encourage customers' compliance, and support a successful brand name. The third is
that research reveals employee training, effective regulation by the government, and innovation,
which are the success factors for effective reverse logistics practice implementation.
Findings show that reverse logistics practice not only helps in regulatory compliance but also
brings immense opportunities for ensuring sustainability and lowering operational expenses. The
research provides helpful implications for Saudi pharmaceutical firms to optimize their reverse
logistics practices more economically and sustainably, providing opportunities for solving drug
return and disposal problems.
